Almost all natural ladies I know use coconut oil. Right from childhood, coconut oil was used on my hair by my mum and it’s only as an adult that I have come to appreciate the benefits of the oil. Other than being ridiculously affordable, there are obvious benefits of coconut oil to our strands. I will outline just a few relating to how I use it because I believe they are so many… 🙂
Being one of the few oils that can penetrate the cortex of the hair, coconut oil keeps your strands healthy by reducing any chance of dryness. Remember dry hair breaks easily. So if you have been struggling with dry hair, I would advice that you use a generous amount coconut oil by rubbing it against your strands. To make penetration into the shaft easier, you can warm the oil then rub against your strands. As a kid, my mum/big sister would order us(my small sister and I) to sit under the sun after applying coconut oil on our hair. I think this was basically to help the oil penetrate the strand faster. You can do the same as well 😉 I use it when creating my bantu knots and twist outs. Who wants extra dry twists? 😉
Have you been struggling with an itchy scalp? or worse off, dandruff? Well, coconut oil may be the solution to your hair worries. Coconut has both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial ingredient that will sooth your scalp. Before you apply the oil, make sure you moisturize (using water). Sometimes dandruff and itchiness are caused by dry breaking scalp. Therefore you need to continuously hydrate your scalp and strands (even by drinking enough water throughout the day). After you hydrate, apply the oil on both the scalp and the strands. You can do this everyday for maximum results, especially overnight if you are fighting dandruff and itchiness.
I also use coconut oil as a prepoo, why? Have you ever gone to wash your hair at the Salon and the lady just attacked the hair straight on with shampoo and the wash process is repeated severally till the hair is clean? You will then notice when it is over how dry and dull your hair will be as well. Our natural hair is made up of lots of protein which gives it the strength. Every time you wash your hair, you loose a little bit of the protein. But since coconut penetrates the strand before hand, the amount of protein lost is minimized therefore reducing breakage and split ends. I am actually preparing a video of how I prepoo my hair so stay tuned dearie 😉
For the above reasons, you can try use coconut oil as the regular oil for your strands, scalp and as prepoo treatment. You won’t regret. One obvious reason I never used to like coconut oil was the smell. I can’t stand the smell. I was shocked to find out that some people actually love the smell. For this reason, I use the scent-free coconut oil (captured above). I recently incorporated the use of the unprocessed coconut oil that is also used for cooking (captured below) into my regimen for maximum results. You can get either of them from any Nakumatt Outlet or any beauty shop. They are easily accessible.
I hope you have garnered a reason or two to jump in the coconut oil wagon. You won’t regret it. I know the oil has equally great benefits for your skin but I have not used it on my skin. Have you? May be you can share about that on the comment section?
Till next time,
Keep you hair lustrous, healthy and oily with coconut oil.
