Mid March is here already and 2017 is not letting us catch a break. I have learnt a number of things over the past few months and I thought it would be nice to share with you. You may relate and it might be helpful to someone who needs to feel motivated and uplifted. So let’s get a bit personal, shall we?
So the great news is that I passed my Kenya School of Law Bar Exams! I am still excited about this because it is almost unbelievable when you pass those exams. I can only thank God for His grace because those exams are not easy at all. Last year I thought I would write about that experience (bar exams), but after they were over, I needed a break from everything; from the blog, from books of any sought, from everything! It was a well-deserved break but all in all, I am delighted that that phase of my life is over.
After the bar exams, comes pupillage (attachment for like six months). For the last three months, I was so caught up looking for this pupillage that I forgot to live life for a minute there. Everyday was filled with numerous applications to law firms and other pupillage approved centres. I was so focused on getting it to a point I turned down (or gave a cold shoulder to) great opportunities that I normally would be excited to embark on. It took a conman (yes, I was conned but that is a story for another day) to get me to snap back to reality and carry with me a few life’s teachings.
- That life is for the living.
Yes, life is indeed for the living. We spend a whole lot of time working in jobs we hate and in those moments we die a little more inside. Everyday you spend doing something you absolutely hate is a day wasted because I truly believe that we all have a purpose. The things you are passionate about are not random; they are your calling and no matter how insane they sound, you have to gather courage to pursue them.
2. Comparison is the thief of joy.
I have also struggled with comparison. Sometimes I hold back great content for this platform because “they are not up to standard” or “the lighting ain’t perfect” or etc.. The excuses keep piling!! I had to snap out of this because comparison is truly the thief of joy. We all have different struggles and social media doesn’t make it easy for us. You can spend a great deal of time scrolling on your timeline and wondering why your life ain’t as perfect as that of person x. I have learnt to admit that:I may not be where I would want to be right now but I am sure that I am where I am supposed to be. It takes time to work on yourself and just like a wild flower, you must allow yourself to grow in all the places people though you never would.
3. Just do it!
Whatever dream you have, whatever goals you have, just do it! We make goals but we fail to plan how to execute them. The reason the blog has been a bit slow this year for me is solely because I didn’t plan. My goals remain to inspire women with natural hair out there but I did not quite plan how to do it this year. When I started this blog last year, i wrote down a plan and I followed it and so I know the power of the pen. There is power in planning on paper how to execute your goals. Though I am planning in March, it’s not too late to get back on track. If you feel like you are late (like I do), just start. A goal without plan is just a wish. So start and do it!
4. Be your biggest motivator.
You have to be your biggest cheerleader. You know yourself better than anyone does; you know your dreams; you know your goals; you know how bad you want to succeed! You can’t wait for someone else to validate your dreams! Sometimes you have to give yourself pep-talks. Like “Hello. You’re a badass woman, don’t be sad, you got this and I love you“. Keep pushing yourself. You got this.
5. Surround yourself with positive energy.
Our environment shapes us. Be picky about who you keep around you. Personalities, words, and traits do rub off naturally. Surround yourself with people that reflect who you want to be and how you want to feel, energies are contagious
Finally, as a believer, commit your plans to God so that He may walk ahead of you and lead you to your goal. I seek to grow closer to God this year, everyday. For if you look for Christ, you will find Him, and with him, everything else 😉
Thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you have resonated with one or two points here. We can chat more via the comment section. And hey, watch out for great content this year, let’s do this 😉
